John’s story: “What made me a survivor I believe, was that I took an active part in dealing with the illness, instead of just letting the whole process happen to me. I learnt that you have to participate in the healing journey, big time.” At first John relied almost totally on the chemotherapy, but just kept relapsing. “What you learn after a while is that you are going to have to do something yourself rather than rely on which ever treatment.” These days (20 years on) John is enjoying his life more than ever, and considers himself totally cured.
Jerry’s story: “By the time I received verification I had the disease, I had already decided to take things into my own hands. The first thing I did was research what survivability rates existed within the conventional model of treatment. What I saw there was not encouraging.” Jerry sets out to find his own natural healing cure, and as well finds two physicians to mentor and coach him as he needed it. He cured himself of lymphoma and is totally cancer free now 11 years on!

Why I Wrote This Book
As a health and wellness psychologist in private practice for over 25 years I have supported and counselled a number of clients diagnosed with lymphoma and other life-threatening illnesses, as they made their journey back to health.
I have also had several friends diagnosed with lymphoma, and have seen first-hand what a challenging journey this can be for sufferers and their families.
Many clients told me they wished they could have read the stories of other lymphoma survivors.
As I researched the idea of writing a book, I spoke to many people and was saddened to find how many people had been affected by the disease, either directly themselves, or indirectly through a friend or loved one.
While I heard many wonderful stories of survival, I also heard sadly there were others who had not survived.
I Wanted To Know Why Some People Survived and Some Did Not
I set out to find out if there were certain survivor characteristics and strategies that when identified and used by people with a life threatening illness, would increase their chances of survival.
The more I talked to people, the more I felt there was a real need for a book of survivor stories to be written.
I saw the 2 main purposes of such a book would be:
to support, uplift and encourage those newly diagnosed with lymphoma start to make their journey back to health with hope and optimism.
to identify survivor characteristics strategies and insights to help sufferers adjust their behaviour, attitudes and mental outlook towards that of becoming a survivor
You will be happy to know I have written the book, and in it have included some of the most valuable information you can read at this time about how others survived this life threatening illness.
Who Survives? Survivor Characteristics
To bring all this survivor information together, I have summarised the experiences of these 7 survivors in a comprehensive 25 point checklist, along with 3 other checklist of survivor information I have included from other authors.
These checklists contain valuable information about:
Successful survivor strategies
Survivor personality characteristics
Survivor healing wisdoms and insights
With this survivor information you will discover what others have used to recover from a life threatening illness.
Knowing these Survivor Characteristics will Help you:
Adjust your own attitude, thinking and behaviour in the direction of becoming a survivor.
Stay focused on the path towards survival, particularly during the more difficult and challenging times that will occur along the way.
Keep your mind set on the goal you want, (the return of your health) rather than on what you do not want (the illness)
-
Communicate with the health professionals, friends, family who are supporting you in a way that ensures you are all ‘on the same page’ about the healing path you wish to follow.

Following are some extracts from each of the 7 survivors interviewed in this book – stories of real people who have beaten the odds and survived lymphoma cancer.
Rod's Story
When Rod was diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 58, he agrees to proceed with the traditional treatment of chemotherapy, offered by his physician and goes ahead and has a round of chemotherapy. However when his tumour reappears some months later, and he is told he will need more aggressive form of chemotherapy, and then a stem cell transplant, he feels he cannot keep following the medical treatment regime. He makes a decision to follow an alternative cancer treatment program. From that time forward, he started to get well. He finishes his inspirational story in this way. “I feel healthy now. I have gone 2 years since treatment, I’m looking and feeling good and my energy is up. I am well. That is how I feel these days” This is a story packed full of wisdom about his healing journey.
Duane's Story
In 2002, Duane at the age of 20 yrs old is diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma Stage 1VB from a routine chest X ray. After considerable chemotherapy and radiation treatment, his cancer relapses 3 times and he ends up having a stem cell transplant. As of August 2009, 5 years on Duane is considered cancer free. He tells about his involvement in the ‘lymphoma community’ and how writing helped him deal with his emotions, and helped make him a survivor. He also shares how he had very clear goals and was determined not to let the ‘c’ word get in the way of those. This is a wonderful story of survival with many helpful ideas for beating the disease.
Melanie's Story
In 1985, Melanie was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Stage 11B, just three weeks before turning 21, and six weeks prior to her college graduation, and just as she has met the ‘man of her dreams’. She accepts the radiation treatment that is offered by her doctor, which reduces her tumour, and she remains in remission for three years. She becomes pregnant and then finds however that the lymphoma has returned. This is a devastating situation for her and potentially for her unborn baby. But Melanie uses the power of positive imaging to help her come out a survivor. Now some 25 years on she has lived to see her two boys graduate from college. This is an amazing story with specific details about how Melanie applied positive visualisation among other things, to become a survivor.
Bob's Story
In his mid-forties back in 2001, when Bob was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma he had a two year old daughter at the time whom he made as his reason to get better. He determined that the cancer was not going to win! Unfortunately the tumour returned in 2008 and this time Bob made some radical changes to his lifestyle and in particular his diet. “I stand firm that you are what you eat and you become what you think about. It’s equally important to have a healthy outlook, as it is to maintain a healthy diet.” He concludes “If I were to have fed on a diet of negative thoughts, just lying around for the end to come, I might not be here today. Bob’s inspirational story gives many insights into how he became a survivor.
John's Story
John was diagnosed in 1989 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma Stage 111, when he was 38. Like Rod, he starts his healing journey relying totally on the conventional chemotherapy treatment being offered by his doctor. However, after relapsing twice more after further chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, and after coming very close to death’s door, John has the realisation he has to participate in his healing journey, if he wants to regain his health. He finds the most amazing blessings have come from the experience he went through now some 20 years ago. “I now am really enjoying my life now more than ever”. John, being a healer himself has been able to offer many beautifully articulated insights into how to regain your health in the face of a life threatening illness.
Pam's Story
After taking over a year to get diagnosed, Pam finally finds out she has Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, not long after her 50th birthday. It is a relief to at last have a diagnosis. Pam opts for the conventional medical treatments offered, but supplements these with a range of other treatments, which helped keep her ‘feeling good’ and better able to manage the side effects of her treatment. She describes how the experience has changed her, and how three years on, she has recovered and is back to her old self and ‘running at 100% again’. This is a very inspiring story, in which someone bravely faces up to her worst fears, and beats the odds.
Brian's Story
Brian was 37, and married with a small son, when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin disease stage 1V. He describes how feeling comfortable with his physician kept him feeling inspired and optimistic, how his mental attitude was 90% of the battle, and how having a small son provided him with an over-riding motivation to get well again
